Between the very interesting changes brought by The Second World War in Romania, the political, cultural and aesthetic implications of poetry translation during those tempestuous times should not be neglected. Who, what, how much, where was poetry translated and under what cultural policies ? One could consider, in this regard, the choice of poetic forms (the the epigrammatic genre associated with German genius, for example) and the preference for certain poetic styles ; the oscillation (and at certain moments even the polemic) between translations of militant poetry and those of classical poetry, the tendency towards direct vs indirect translations, the taste for the exotic poetry. Poetic imagination, enunciative postures, and tropes are also overdetermined by the experience of war. It is also necessary to reflect on the timing of poetry translation, based on the three changes in Romania’s political positioning during the Second War (between September 1939 and June 1941, Romania had not yet effectively involved itself in the war ; between July 1941 and August 1944, it militarily engaged on the side of the Axis and against the Allies ; between August 1944 and May 1945, it changed sides and joined the Allies, fighting against the Nazis), even if there is always a certain lag in synchronizing cultural policies with the changes that appear on the political level. The main trends in poetic translation from 1939 to 1945 in Romania (themes and countries of interest), the personalities and institutions involved in this process, and the networks remain to be identified. They should also address the role of poetry in times of war : does it represent a refuge against the realities of the time or is it a manifesto/ a form of resistance against tyranny ?
